He was born near Diamond Grove, Missouri, probably in 1864 but possibly as early as 1861. He was the younger of 1 sister, 2 brothers. His slave father Giles died before birth, and his slave mother Mary was kidnapped during George's infancy. He was raised along with his brother Jim by Moses and Susan Carver on there farm. He was always more of a inside boy and had a great skill with what his brother called girl things. Even though he was inside boy George always had a fascination with plants. This fascination grows mainly cause he lived on a farm. He was sent on an arrant one day to Neosho (a small town a few miles away from the Carvers farm) to get coffee and on his way back he noticed a building which had about 40 black kids run out of it. He then came to the conclusion that it was a school for black folk. This made George very happy. When he got back to the farm and talked to uncle and aunt carver about it he realized the fact that he would have no were to stay. So he didn’t go till much later. About a year later George was reading the bible and he read a passage that said God would provide for you. So George decided to leave it up to God. And he left for Neosho. When he got there it was late so he found a hayloft an
After most of 1880 passed the Seymour said to George that they were moving.. George asked were they were going and they told him about a place up the railroad track that was growing like wild fire. And they asked George if he wanted to go with them. George decided to stay until his school year was finished. So after the school year came to an end. George realized that he had a problem. He realized that he had to walk two hundred mile to Minneapolis (this is were the Seymour’s lived). But George did not worry about this too much. He just told himself that he would see a lot to nature on the way there. After the harvest George felt that it was time to move to so he told the farmer that he was going and the farmer asked him were he was headed. George answer “west”. The farmer was shocked. He told George to be careful, because out west was the great American desert. Not only was food and water a problem but out there but there were a lot of out laws roaming around. George took this advice and stared heading northeast toward Kansas City. Georges crop had failed twice now so he almost gave up hope. So he decided to give it one more chance. So in the end George harvested a little but then something terrible happened. The price of corn dropped to half of what it was. So George was angry because the only thing that he succeed in was school, but he couldn’t go to college. The town was also dying the population dropped to about half of what it was. He George wanted to leave but didn’t know how he was going to do it. He heard that the railroad company was hiring people to build extensions of the main track and were hiring colored folk. George was kind of glad when he found out that the tracks were going west because he had always wanted to go west but never had the mean to. But now he could safely travel across the desert At the inn or hotel were he stayed he met a man named Mr. Steely. He taught George a lot about the farming up north. He also helped George set up his barn. It was from him that George learned about the price of different crops. George found out that corn didn’t have as much money in it because with the early winter in Kansas corn was one of the only things that could be harvested twice a year. George did not want to farm corn though, he wanted to farm wheat. But wheat as he learned was very hard compared to corn and you need a special mill to grind it. This disappointed George greatly. So that spring George ended up planting corn. Even though George would of rather planted wheat he was happy and very protective of his crop. He was alarmed when the rainy season ended and some of his crop died. He then remembered that he needed a well. It took along time to find the area with water but once he did he was very nervous. The thought of going down into the well like that made him worry a lot. But he prayed and God calmed him down. He final started digging. After about two weeks of digging he got very worried because at seventeen feet there was still no water. So George gave up and kept looking for water. George never found water and was very annoyed that he bought land with no water in it. d went to sleep. The next morning George was waiting for school to start and sat down on a woodpile near the hayloft that he slept in and a women came out off her house to get wood. When see found him there George explained that he did have anywhere to stay and his whole situation and then she took him in. George found himself living with Andrew and Mariah. This only strengthened George’s faith cause God had provided for him.
