Pollution and the Implications on our Society

Discovery Channel is one of the most popular and attractive channels. Why is it so unique? Every show tells us a legend and unique story from the world we are living with. The blue planet is the stage and the animals and humans are the actors performing on the stage. Since the human society is separated and developed from the nature environment thousands years ago, the conflict between the two societies, which are highly connected, is still existing and unavoidable. Furthermore, along with the urbanization, globalization and quickly growing population, much more waste is produced by daily life production. Humans are making an even more drastic affected on the environment.

Different people have different perspectives about the topic of pollution. An environmental activist would have a different point of view about pollution than a politician. It’s hard to say weather pollution is good or bad. For this reason, we would open and discuss the argument about pollution by different perspective, the damage degree of pollution and the long time vs. short time influence.

I definitely believe that pollution is harmful and what ever actions to help the environment should be done while taken other considerations like economic resources. Pollution affects everybody. It puts a strain on our daily life and makes livings unhealthy in a short term. In the long term, it even threatens our lives. The industrial revolution by humans in the early 1900s accelerated the pollution of our environment. From that point, the amount of pollution created by humans every year has increased drastically. Topics like the greenhouse effect, the hole in the ozone layer, acid rain are not new to our vocabulary. The greenhouse effect warms up the earth and helps create large amounts of smog over busy, highly populated cities. Many different respiratory problems can be attributed from smog and many people die or are hospitalized every year. The hole in the ozone layer makes spending large amounts of time outside during periods of a UV rating a dangerous activity. More and more people have been diagnosed with skin cancer due to the harmful sun rays. Acid rains caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the creation of large amounts of nitrous oxide and sulfuric oxide also claim countless victims in the form of plants and animals. It has been reported that maple trees in Canada have been producing less maple syrup than previous years due to acid rain. Canada now experiences unpredictable weather patterns due to pollution like El Nino, violent winter snowstorms in Ontario and Quebec as well as floods and draughts in our prairies.
