American Family Revisted
American Family Revisited showed the effects on a family who were the cast of the first “reality” television show that was aired in 1973. The concept of the documentary is a good one, especially for those who remember the Louds and their openness to the world. It gave the family a good hour to explain their side ten years later, after the original backlash had settled. The stories of the Louds’ appearance on An American Family and their experiences afterwards were told in a series of flashbacks and testimonials that were indicated by a script font that would appear on the bottom of the screen. It would often give the location of the “character” and the year; this was an intelligent way to refer to the characters. Because they are family members many look alike and it’s hard to remember who Kevin is and who Grant is, especially in the clips from the actual show. The director solved this problem by adding the text. In this documentary there were no “Magic Moments” in which the story was changed while filming, however, in the actual series Pat asked for a divorce from Bill, a magic moment which was discussed in much detail in Revisted. Pat sites it as being one of the most embarra
Another side that does not get shown is the actual filmmakers and editors of the series. How they were affected by the press and how they managed to make the series would have been an interesting view, which may have even sped the making of reality television today to an earlier time. It would have also shown the motivation of editing that had to be done throughout the series. In American Family Revisited, the filmmakers set out to show the “where are they now” aspect of the Louds. They went through each family member, showing flashbacks of who they were ten years ago, and then explained who they were at date, their occupation, their relationships and attempted to show how their appearance on the show affected their lives up till 1983. An emphasis on marriage is expressed in many of the scenes. Whether or not the parents had remarried, which Bill had done, and each were asked if they thought it were strange that none of the children were married or thinking about marriage at the time. ssing moments of the show. Both Bill and Pat were adamant in their belief that the cameras had no effect upon the decision to split. This is the difference of reality television today and this specific project. While editing is part of both processes, when the original American Family was shot, the divorce was not scripted into the show to cause drama.
