After having closely examined the text, it is obvious that Jack Merridew attains the majority of his power by ruining Ralph’s credibility and rules, and taking on important responsibilities, and most notably, he intimidates the children. For instance, he gains an abundance of his respect on the island from sabotaging Ralph’s ideas such as, when Jack attempts to get rid of the idea that the conch, or freedom of speech, is needed. In fact, he also attains much of his control of the island by voluntarily taking on crucial tasks like, the portion of the novel where Jack willingly accepts the responsibility of hunting and keeping the fire lit. Thirdly, Jack is able to gain supremacy by using physical force, such as when he orders his tribe members tie up Sam and Eric in order to intimidate them and force them to join his group. In conclusion, one says this, what type of world would one live in if it was not based on the idea of the on going battle for domination, power and social status?

Throughout the course of the novel, Jack attains supremacy over Ralph by voluntarily taking on important responsibilities. A clear example of this is when the survivors first attempt to organize a responsibility for everyone. Jack willingly undertakes the task of keeping the fire going. Jack speaks to Ralph and indirectly to the gathered crowd of boys, “Ralph-I’ll split up the choir – my hunters, that is – into groups, and we’ll be responsible for keeping the fire going” (Golding 47). The above quote is proof that when Mr. Merridew accepts important tasks he then has more power in his possession. The next example of this happening is when Jack claims that he and his hunters will protect the boys from the beast by killing it. He announces this while most of the survivors are gathered to show that he is ver self-confident. Jack promptly states, “I’m going up the mountain to look for the best – now” (Golding 131).
