In the film Easy Rider we see two men, Wyatt and Billy search for freedom and happiness as they travel from Los Angles to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras celebration. The men are viewed and treated differently as they move eastward across the country. Throughout the movie Wyatt and Billy encounter many different types of people who have an impact on them. After finally reaching the big easy and celebrating Mardi Gras Wyatt turns to Bill and says, “We blew it.” This could mean many different things but I believe it means that both men forgot what they were looking for.

Wyatt and Billy are different people in the eyes of society. They do not conform to rules and regulations like most citizens and because of this they are sometimes looked down upon. Both men do not want to live in a city where they will be forced to live their lives according to what other people tell them to do; this is the major reason why these men travel across the country. Eventually Billy and Wyatt make it to New Orleans and celebrate Mardi Gras. After the celebration both men are camping out and sharing a joint together and Wyatt tells Billy that they blew it. Billy does not understand and shrugs it off because they have the money and believes they will have happiness. Wyatt on the other hand does not care so much for the money but is looking for the happiness. Here Wyatt realizes that he had everything he was looking for back in that little settlement with the girl. They were living alone not being bothered by anyone else and were completely free. This is the reason why the men traveled across the country in the first place, to get away from the binds of society. The men got so caught up in making it to New Orleans they forgot what they were looking for and after experiencing the celebration it finally dawned upon Wyatt that he missed the opportunity he was looking for.
