The Crucible

In Salem, Massachusetts a group of teenage girls were caught dancing naked in the woods. They were dancing with a Barbadian slave, named Tituba. The girls were discovered by Reverend Parris, who was Abigail Williams’s uncle and Betty Parris’ dad. After being caught they were accused of witchcraft, but they denied it, which increases the hysteria in the religious town of Salem. In the book conflicts between people that were unresolved had tragic results. The Crucible is revolved around three major themes honesty, relationships, and justice.

One theme portrayed by Arthur Miller was honesty. First of all if everyone would have been honest then society wouldn’t have been destroyed. The girls should have been honest about them practicing witchcraft in the woods. They all blamed each other and pointed fingers at everyone, which is why the Salem Witch Trials came in effect. Innocent lives wouldn’t have been taken away if the girls were honest about their actions. If Goody Proctor would’ve told the truth to the court about John’s adultery, the trials would have stopped, and Abigail would have been prosecuted.
