Why People Smoke
Meet Gilda the compulsive chain smoking cat lover. Gilda was the third of five children growing up in a smoking home. Both her father and mother smoked. They also played bingo excessively which led to a break down in the family. Bingo will do that to a family. Gilda tried her first cigarette at the age of eight and a half, but it’s not like she hadn’t been second hand smoking since three (her parents tried not to smoke around the babies but that didn’t last long). Gilda didn’t care much for school and dropped out in tenth grade, she had so much more fun sleeping… and if not sleeping then smoking with her friends. Gilda’s first husband was Fred, she was 17 and he was 20. Their marriage lasted three years, Gilda couldn’t handle Fred’s fully developed smoker cough in the mornings and Fred had to work much too hard in order to by cigs for two. Half of them will die prematurely. Most of the young people that get addicted to tobacco do not understand the nature of nicotine addiction and the long-term consequences of their action. Nicotine, chemically, is a poisonous alkaloid (other alkaloids include cocaine and morphine), which when inhaled in cigarette smoke has major effects on your mood. When you inhale cigarette smoke it goes into the lungs and here the nicotine diffuses into the blood causing most common form of smoking today is through cigarettes. Although studies continue to show the harmful effects of smoking, people continue to become addicted to this substance. According to the American Heart Association “more than 6,000 people under age 18 try a cigarette each day, and each day more than 2,000 persons under age 18 become daily smokers”.
