o brother!
The following paper draws parallels between Homer’s "Odyssey" and the Coen Brother’s "O Brother Where Art Thou?". In the year 2000, the inventive and provocative filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen reworked the Odyssey in a liberal way, changing scenes, settings and characters. The writer compares the original epic and the original screenplay and discusses dozens of small but meaningful comparisons. For instance, Odysseus and his men descend into Hades where they encounter several ghosts from Odysseus’s past; in the film the boys meet a fellow inmate who they thought was dead. Odysseus from the original epic and Ulysses from the film (played by George Clooney) both have to prove to their wives that they are true: Ulysses must bring Penny the ring to redeem himself. In the Odyssey, Book 23, Penelope declares that “there are tokens with which we two alone are acquainted,” (Butler trans.). Although it was written millennia ago in ancient Greece, the parables of the Odyssey remain extant for a reason:Its themes are universal and accessible and adaptable for all time. The Coen brothers' movie "O Brother Where Art Thou?" exemplifies Homer’s timelessness, as well as their own versatility. The following paper draws parallels bet
YOU are a boy. O brother is a good movie. The Greek gods replace the Southern Baptist conception of God and Satan. The Sheriff is Satan, for he is always associated with fire. The water from the flood that saves the gang from Satan is a baptism from the Christian God. Many unique comparisons can be made between the Odyssey and the film O Brother Where Art Thou. Although, most of the similarities do not jump out, they become apparent with deeper analysis. In relation to their latest film and the story in which it is based on, I will not pretend that I know my Greek myths, fact of the matter is I am planning to re-read the story and view the film a second time in order to view all the inside-jokes I probably missed the first time. But what the eye can see without reading the story is a lush, extravagant, beautifully filmed story replete with great cinematography by the gifted Roger Deakins. Simply view the film's opening and understand and experience just what kind of look he has given this film. And as always the Coen's pack in as many twists and memorable scenes as ever before including a well choreographed and comedic 'larger than life' Klu-Klux Klan scene where our heroes attempt to save their begotten friend. Even though the poem and the film do not mirror each other completely. They do have two things in common; both of the protagonist’s are looking for a way back to their families and the hope to restore some order back into their lives.
