His accomplishments included improving the telegraph and inventing the light bulb, the phonograph, and early movie equipment. In 1882, Edison set up the world’s first electricity power station and supply network to offices, shops, and houses in New York. Edison heard about Bell’s telephone in 1875, and within a year he had invented his own version. In fact Edison’s carbon-button design is the one used in telephones today.”

“Another one of Bell’s more popular rivals was American scientist and inventor Elisha Gray. Elisha worked on many electrical devices. In 1867 he devised a self-adjusting relay switch for the telegraph: like Bell he wanted to develop a multiple telegraph. In 1888 he came up with the telautograph, a telegraph-based machine that could transmit patterns of dots and lines on paper—a very early attempt at the fax machine.”(Parker 18) Without these great rivals, Graham Bell would not have been rushed and he might not have finished his research and invention of the telegraph before he died.
