The Affects of Deep and Abidin

The Affects of Deep and Abiding Prayer on our Physiological Well Being

“Who rises from prayer a better man, his prayer is answered”. George Meredith made this statement almost 100 years ago. In today’s humanistic, rush-rush society, the subject of prayer seems to be one that has slipped away into obscurity. When considering prayer, it is very easy to think of its religious and spiritual implications. It is easy to consider that prayer is better left to the ‘righteous’, or the ‘church leaders’. This ideal has been peddled into the hearts and minds of common people by those who know little or nothing about prayer and its results. The benefits of prayer go far beyond simple ‘talking to God’. Prayer changes the very essence of the way our body reacts to stress and disease. People have looked for the fountain of youth, or a miracle elixir to give themselves long life and happiness. Yet, for all the looking, nothing is found. Nothing is found that can equal the long lasting affects that prayer provides.

Whether you believe the bible or not, you must admit, it has been in existence for countless centuries. Referring to its many books, passages, scriptures, and proverbs has been an inspiration to millions

Doctor Harold Koenig, associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at Duke University, did such a research and compiled a comprehensive document, citing the studies done on the affect of prayer upon health (The Handbook of Health and Religion, Koenig, et al, 1997). In this, he documents that people who are actively involve in prayer show some remarkable physiological improvements over those who are not so inclined. He documents that hospitalized people who do not prayer have an average stay of three times longer than people who do. In addition, heart patients are 14 times more likely to die following surgery, if they did not have an active prayer regimen.

The studies go on and on, and we could continue to set them before us, like a great cloud of witnesses. Every one of these studies confirms that prayer, in its simplicity and earnestness to know a God that cannot be seen or physically touched, changes our life. Albert Einstein said, “Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.” If we would resolve ourselves to diligent and consistent prayer, our lives would be changed. Every prayer brings us that much closer to the blessings as described in Deuteronomy chapter 28. Every prayer brings us a little closer to the fountain of youth sought after so many years ago. Every time we bend our knee to speak with a benevolent God, it is one more time that we are purchasing a little insurance into the health of our bodies. Notice carefully how the quoted
