The Civil War is sometimes called the War Between the States, the War of Rebellion or the War for Southern Independence. It began on April 12 1861 and lasted until May 26 1865. The event I have ranked third would be the Kansas Nebraska Act. This act had caused tension between the North and the South before the Civil War. This act had went against the Missouri Compromise because the compromise was that the territories north of 36° 30' where to prohibit slavery. Then the Kansas Nebraska Act stated that the people of the territory should decide for themselves the legality of slaveholding. Since Kansas and Nebraska were north of the line established in the Missouri Compromise, the act made possible the extension of the slave system into territory previously considered free soil. Soon, settlers in Kansas were engaged in a bloody battle to decide the slavery issue. This was significant because it was causing more tension to the both sides.
