Thomas Wolfe
In the short story by Thomas Wolfe, there is a sense of prejudice from a long time ago. The story shows the actions and the way black people were treated and how they acted towards that treatment. In the short story “Child by Tiger,” there are many different treatments of racial differences such as the treatment of the children, the car wreck, and the actions of the “mob.”First of all, the treatment of the children was the same as the adults. Norman Floyd, of the Oklahoma Press, said, “One of his chief attributes is the respect and humility of the southern darky- he calls even the boys ‘mister’.” Dick Prosser made the boys feel important by calling them “mister” or “sir” or in Randy Shepperton’s case, “Cap’n.” Dick treated everyone with equal respect and courtesy. The kids liked being treated like that, but the kids like Dick, they too treated him with respect, and the
Last but not least, the actions of the “mob” were yet another treatment of racial differences. Dick had a fight with the husband of another servant and killed him with the rifle that the boys had found. Next, Dick went berserk and kills a policeman, a grocery man, a black janitor, another policeman, and shoots at and misses a drunken judge. After three days of chasing Dick, the “mob” catches him because he ran out of bullets. By this time, Dick has done killed a total of seven men. The “mob” had literally destroyed Dick’s body. His body was “displayed” in the window of the undertaker’s shop where everyone who walked by could see it. This was kind of a sign for all of the black people showing them what would happen if they ever thought of doing what Dick did. To the “mob” it was just another negro that they didn’t have to worry about. On the other hand, if it was a white guy
