We Can Do It?

             Women have been struggling along the road of civil rights, perpetually attaining the proper allowances and respect they have deserved since the first steps were taken in the Women's Rights Movement in 1848. Although women have made great progress in gaining many of the freedoms that were once so strongly desired, there are still aspects of life, which are elusive. In Karen Horney's "The Distrust Between the Sexes", several issues and causes for distrust between men and women are addressed. Horney states, "as a result of repression, women shift the blame for helplessness to the man." In society today, women are faced with hardships and double standards in the corporate world, the field of education, and also in their view of body image and sex.
             Every day women are faced with oppression at the workplace. Although much advancement has been made, many of the same inequalities exist today that did so many years ago. On average, employers are paying women only 70 cents for each dollar, which is earned by a man. Politically, women are also underrepresented. In the United States Senate, only eight percent of the seats are held by women; and in the House of Representatives, women fulfill only ten percent of the positions. As stated by Horney, .
             She is said to be deeply rooted in the personal and emotional spheres, .
             which is wonderful; but unfortunately, this makes her incapable of exercising justice and objectivity, therefore disqualifying her for positions in law and government and in the spiritual community. (366) .
             Horney is saying that woman's natural feelings and qualities of being nurturing, loving and emotional act as boundaries, limiting where they may work. Even though in today's society there are women with jobs relative to law and government, comparatively, with that of men, it is very diminutive.
