Daniel

Who is Daniel? Every Christian knows the story of “Daniel and the loin’s den,” but do we really know him? When was he born? What was his life like? What was his relationship with God? In this paper, I will answer these questions as well as tell what we can learn from Daniel’s life.

Daniel’s life was subject to violent disruption and tremendous change, yet he was one of the most stable and composed of Bible characters. Although Daniel operated in the fiercely competitive and corruptible political arena, even his enemies admitted that he was totally trustworthy and he was neither corrupt nor negligent in any of his duties (Dan. 6:4).

According to Nave‘s Topical Bible, the word “Daniel” means God is my judge or judge of God. He was the fourth of the greater prophets. His life and prophecies are recorded in the book of Daniel. He was descended from one of the royal families of Judah( Dan. 1:3), and was probably born in Jerusalem about B.C. 623, during the reign of Josiah. He was carried captive, along with three of his friends, to Babylon in 604 B.C. He was renamed Belteshazzar, which means “may Bel protect us.” He was trained for court service. He quickly established a rep

I have learned many lessons from my study of Daniel’s life. One lesson is that faith is action. You don’t have to be rich or famous to get things done. There may be consequences but the God of Daniel, and our God, is big enough to see us through those consequences.

Near the end of Nebuchadnezzar’s life, Daniel was able to interpret a second dream ( Dan. 4). After the death of Nebuchadnezzar in 562 B.C., Daniel dropped from public view and evidently occupied an inferior position in the royal court. Although he received visions (Dan 7-8) in the first and third years of the Belshazzar’s reign, it was not until approximately 539 B.C. that Daniel made a public appearance. During a banquet hosted by Belshazzar, the king mocked the sacred vessels stolen from the Jerusalem temple. A disembodied hand suddenly appeared and wrote on the temple walls. Daniel was summoned to explain the message. He forcasted the sudden end of the Babylonian kingdom. That same night Belshazzar was killed and the Persians successfully overtook the capital city ( Dan. 5:30).

Under Darius, Daniel became one of the three “presidents” or administrators of the realm ( Dan. 6:2). Daniel’s rank, along with his distinguished management, made his political enemies very angry. They persuaded Darius to pass a law forbidding prayer to any god or man other than the king. If one was to violate this law they would be thrown into a den of lion’s. Daniel’s religious integrity forced him to violate this law. He was thrown into the lion’s den but miraculously came out unhurt. He was vindicated by being restored to office ( Dan. 6:17-28). <
