The Criminality of the Europeans in Heart of Darkness
Imagine a colony morally torn to shreds all because of a simple item. The novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad displays such an act, and that simple item is ivory. The Europeans were supposed to strengthen the colony, but instead they are trapped in a spiral of greed. It is the bridge to many other problems brought into Africa. Racism and murder are only a few of the numerous other harms in the colony. The greed of the Europeans changes the structured attempt of colonialism into brutal acts of criminality.
The European’s greed for ivory is uncontrollable throughout the novel. In their eyes, the ivory is a window of opportunities for them. In the novel they treat the search for ivory as if it is more important than their real jobs. They search for it
Not only is Africa being corrupted, but their people and elephants die due to the white mans greed. Trouble-free, white European men turn into dreadful killers when in Africa. A simple man such as Kurtz lets his inner evil emerge, and is defeated by his darkness. Kurtz makes it his goal to eliminate all that blocks his path to financial bliss. He even kills innocent beings. Marlow discovers unexpected proof of the killings. “Exterminate all the brutes.” (123) Kurtz’s unpredicted comment displays how the Europeans barely think twice over killing in order to satisfy their pursuit of ivory. Numerous elephants also die everyday during the battles for their tusks. Money can lead anyone to a path of wrong doing.
