Although Mrs. Dubose is an irritable character in To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus views her as brave as she fights her drug addiction. In the beginning of the novel, Mrs. Dubose is addicted to morphine, and with Jem reading to her every day, a little longer each day, she overcomes her addiction. She is courageous to overcome her addiction, even though she knows she will die anyway. Atticus, a character in the story who views Mrs. Dubose as brave, tells his son Jem, “She [Mrs. Dubose] said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did” (Lee 111). Mrs.

Arthur (Boo) Radley, a character who remains aloof throughout the novel, is found to be brave when he leaves his zone of safety to save Jem and Scout from Mr. Ewell, to do what he believes is true and sure. Boo risks his physical well being and his emotional security when saving Jem and Scout. He is so shy and afraid of the outside world, that he has not been seen for decades, so this makes Boo even more honorable. When Heck Tate is explaining to Atticus what happened, when Jem and Scout were attacked, Heck reveals how truly courageous Boo’s actions were. Heck Tate tells Atticus, “…To my way of thinkin’, Mr. Finch, taking the one man who’s done you and this town a great service an’ draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight-to me, that’s a sin” (Lee 276). Boo realizes that by saving Jem and Scout, he will only bring unwanted attention to himself. Although, he courageously risks everything to save ‘his children’ (who have given him a chance for a second life for the past few years) no matter what the future may behold. Boo teaches many the importance of saving what you treasure through bravery.

Dubose chose this battle because she did not want to die addicted to morphine. Atticus views Mrs. Dubose’s actions as courageous, and tells Jem, “I wanted you to see something about her- I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.
