Proof For God

Living in a secular society, there are questions that will come up throughout life in our relations with non-Christians or those of other beliefs. Two big questions come up very often in the world of higher education when dealing with reason and science, which are often pitted against religion. Science often conflicts with religious beliefs and convictions so that both cannot be true—or so it seems. Are we as Christians defying the laws of reason? Is Christianity even rational?

Often in conservative Christian circles, a battle is portrayed between Scripture and science in which only one can be correct. As Glynn noted early in his life, “either Darwin’s theory was true or the creation story in the book of Genesis was true. They could not both be true…”(Glynn 3). This appearance of conflict is nothing new: Galileo faced it hundreds of years ago. To create this conflict, there must be two conflicting viewpoints. Essentially today in their purest form they are that either the world was created by God in seven days, during which time God created man out of the dust of the earth and gave him a soul and spirit in the likeness of Himself, or else the earth is a by-product of a universe which began with the big bang, a

In light of the latest science, the only rational explanation for what we see around us as creation and life is God. Theories of a universe and life based on chance are irrational and cannot be scientifically considered. At the same time, the Church needs to remember where its focus is due, and focus on matters of eternal truth which transcend the conflict between scientific theory and certain interpretations of scripture. In the words of Patrick Glynn, “If the history of this century offers any lesson, it is that goodness—and a relationship to God, to the Absolute by whatever name He is called—is not only the beginning of wisdom but the only path by which it can be obtained” (Glynn 169).

As Christians, it should not be our goal to fight scientific truth with what one interprets as truth from scripture about temporal things, but it is our goal to spread the truth of scripture that involves the eternal. The church today needs to reconsider what is the most important truth and its focus.

Mechanism eventually came to explain how the universe came to be, and Darwin’s Theory of Evolution claimed to explain mechanistically how we got here. If everything can be explained through the mechanistic model, then there is no reason for God to have to exist. Religion was just a way that we had evolved to explain the unexplainable. Now that everything is explainable, God can be dead. But not quite yet.

Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of this world [which are the matters of science]…Now, it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics; and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn…If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods of facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason [ which is science] (Behe 176-177).

Many scientists today choose to ignore the Anthropic Principle altogether, saying that it doesn’t require explanation. The Anthropic Principle does require explanation: “though we as humans should not be surprised to find ourselves living in a universe suited for life (by definition), we ought to be surprised to learn that the conditions necessary for life are so vastly improbable”(Behe 58). The fact that the constants are what they are does not explain why they are that way.
