Is Cheerleading a Sport?
Cheerleading is a very controversial subject. It can be argued whether or not is should be considered a sport and different people are always going to have different opinions on the matter. Suits used four characteristics to define a sport: it is institutionalized, there is physical skill, the outcome of the competition must be somewhat related to the skill level, and the four characteristics of a game must be present. He then states that sports can be divided into “judged performances” and “refereed games”. Not only would Suits consider competitive cheerleading a sport, but he would also define it as a judged performance. The outcome of the competition has to do with how well the cheering squad can perform. According to Suits, cheerleading passes the fourth and final characteristic of a sport. Cheerleading is also institutionalized, which is another characteristic Suits says is essential in a sport. There are dozens of cheerleading organizations, including the National Cheerleading Association. There are competitions held on the high school and college level. Cheerleading competitions have a wide following and there is almost always a huge crowd of fans at every competition. The major competitions between high school squads and college squads are sometimes televised on cable sports channels. There are tons of other sports that never get air time on television, so for cheerleading to be seen on sports channels such as ESPN has shown just how institutionalized it has become.
