Women have always caused controversy; either because they are considered inferior by most men or either because in our culture they are suppose to be submissive. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, women play different roles and as the book goes on we see different versions of women. Two lines that I chose to compare the different aspects of women described by the narrator in the Epic of Gilgamesh are: the weakness of women without power against the king “His lust leaves no virgin to her lover, neither the warrior’s daughter nor the wife of the noble; yet this is the shepherd of the city, wise, comely, and resolute.”(p.62) and the power of Goddess women like Ishtar against Gilgamesh; now Ishtar speaks to her father “My father give me the Bull of Heaven to destroy Gilgamesh. Fill Gilgamesh, I say, with arrogance to his destruction; but if you refuse to give me the Bull of Heaven I will break in the doors of hell and smash the bolts; there will be confusion of people, those above with those from

In conclusion, we see how culture can be both good and bad for women depending on what is their status. The importance of women in this book gives the story a dramatic turning point. Where at the beginning, we saw the typical women throughout the story the author presents us the new type of women, women with power. And it is a reality because now women are different. Women have fight for their rights and have overcome the obstacles of the past or the usual myth that women are only good for housewives. Now, women have the same right as men and that is probably what the author is trying to show that just as Gilgamesh had the right to use women Ishtar also had the same right. Finally, in comparison to the Goddess (immortal) women, women under the regimen of men or the king have to do what they are told to do by their king because they do not know otherwise. They like it because they cannot choose; they are properties of the king.
