When "90s popular culture collides with 50s values, chaos results," reads the film promo, but what really happens when 90s values collide with our popular culture representations of the 50s? In order to discern this puzzling question we must first understand what were the 90’s values. The nineties was unlike any decade before it. It was a time of libral mindedness and expementation. The nineties was so libral that Lawyer Daniel Foley filed suit in Hawaii on behalf of gay couples in pursuit of same-sex marriage. A lower court rejected the suit but in 1993 the Hawaii Supreme Court reinstated it. In the society that we live in today we would just regard this as every day occurrence and not be at all surprised. This is because our generation is very tolerant to all corners of society. Things that did come, as a shock however was the Sex scandal of the Clinton administration in the late nineties. Bill Clinton was ultimately acquitted of charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. The point is that what happened in the nineties would have shocked the fifties but instead it came as a commonplace to the nineties decade. The more the generation of the nineties saw these atrocities the more they became commonplace
The real question is; is it possible to determine what was the popular culture representation of the fifties and the real fifties. The only way to see the real fifties is throught the eyes of someone who lived it. Unfortinuatly that window of oppurnitutunity is closing with each passing day. When the 90s values collide with our popular culture representations of the 50s, pandoras box is opened and the sins of the ninties is introduced to the seemingly innocent fifties. Turning Pleasantville into a backlash of animosity. In the movie Pleasantville I noticed that three major differences were emphasized between the contrast of the fifties and the nineties. These differences were promiscuity, language and family. There were of course many more but these I think are the major ones. First is promiscuity or Sex; which in the fifties was unheard of noir was it talked about even behind closed doors. The very mention of sex in Pleasantville brought about a look of puzzlement, because the people of Pleasantville had never been exposed to sins of sexual promiscuity. Making love is magical passionate thing between to people who want to express their love by taking it one step further. What the teenagers of Pleasantville were experiences was the pleasure of sex that the kids of the nineties were accustomed to. This of
