Peacekeeping

U.S. Military’s Role in International Peacekeeping

The United States should conduct peacekeeping operations in other countries. By helping to achieve a more stable, secure and peaceful world, America can hope that the world’s economy will thrive and individuals in other countries, as well as American citizens will benefit. If the human race wants a more peaceful world peacekeeping is the answer. U.S. peacekeeping missions have taken place in such places as Somalia and East Timor.

Peacekeeping initially developed during the Cold War. With nations threatening each other with nuclear bombs, the world had to find ways to deescalate regional conflicts. Another reason peacekeeping came around is that the international community thought that it could save lives of innocent civilians during a humanitarian crisis.

Peacekeepers help to spread democracy. The main purpose of peacekeepers is to help two warring parties make an agreement and stop hostile actions. Former Defense Secretary Perry said “Democracy is learned behavior. Many nations today have democracies that exist on paper, but are fragile. Elections are a necessary but insufficient condition for a free society. It is also necessary to embed democratic values in

Many people arguer that the United States pays more than its fare share for peacekeeping efforts. Since January 1, 2001 the U.S. is assessed twenty-two percent of the UN’s budget and twenty-eight percent of the peacekeeping operation budget. To keep peace in the world that is a small price to pay. Another argument is U.S. troops construe most of the soldiers used in peacekeeping operations. Which take them away form their job of protecting the United States. In response to that argument, as of August 23, 2001, less then fifty American soldiers were serving in UN peacekeeping operations. (United)

the key institutions of nations”. Peacekeeping involves the United Nations (UN) getting consent from two nations concerned, to help come to an agreement. Mediation efforts rely on opposing parties consenting to certain conditions. (Mackinlay 3)

Peacekeeping helps spread democracy. If the U.S. was not involved in peacekeeping missions, the nation would not have the same prestige as it does now. Being the greatest world power the U.S. has a responsibility to intervene when other nations have trouble. Representative Donald Payne, Democrat of New Jersey said “The world can’t go around without a police department”. An example of the U.S. policing a nation is in Somalia.

The United States should participate peacekeeping missions all over the world. To represent the American people, and spread democracy to other countries who don’t have the privilege to live a free life peacekeeping is must. The main benefit of the U.S. military participation in peacekeeping missions is to save innocent lives.
