When examining Columbus in the text and Zinn’s book, it was found that the text seemed to give only vague statements about Columbus, where as Zinn gave more detail about him. The text states that Columbus was the first slave trader and the first Spanish explorer conqueror (P. 25). In Zinn it stated that when he came ashore, he was carrying swords. The Arawaks came out to greet them and Columbus took some of them captive right away and began to force information about what the island was like. Zinn’s view of Columbus was that he was an evil tyrant, and all he was searching for was gold and land he could have. That was one of the first things he stated when reaching the new land�

Zinn’s approach about history is very much different then many textbooks. Zinn goes into detail and describes what happened in detail of certain events that took place in history. He describes how Americans reacted to the events that were taking place. The textbooks just brush over the details that would sometimes cause a controversy. People are given a more concrete idea of what Columbus was all about, what the American Revolution was, even the socialist change. Zinn’s view of history is more accurate then our textbooks. He is able to give more details as to why things happened the way they did, or why that caused people to react in the way they did. Zinn’s view is more factual, and he is able to tell it through the eyes of minorities, some foreigners that had become affected by the United States policies and victims that suffered from oppression. Zinn is able to bring up the ideas and thoughts of many of the events that were over looked when writing a textbook. He’s able to show different views of issues, both the positive and negative side of them. With him bringing up some of the little unknown facts, he is able to shed a whole new light on the history of things. He is able to find information about certain people that has been written falsely, and therefore kind of exploit them for the person they were. Zinn gives reason and opposition to the worlds most important events and people. As stated above, Zinn opens a new way of thinking and analization of history to readers’ minds and thoughts.

Zinn’s view was that there was economic unrest. Many of the colonists didn’t agree with the Stamp Act. They wanted it repealed. Many participated in riots against the government. After the riot at the Stamp Masters home, a town meeting was called where mainly the upper and middle class people were allowed to attend. They again tried to tax the colonists, but didn’t want as much uproar as before, but they still seen boycotts take place. Many were there to gain political power, and hold back the rebellions. Zinn wrote about the founding fathers were privileged, and that not all men are created equal. There were many discrepancies within the constitution. Zinn basically said it was a myth. Women in this time were not worthy of consideration. They were treated differently then men. Women were very much over looked in political issues and anything that dealt with civic equality (Zinn P. 57).

The Stamp Act also caused friction to Britain’s financial status. The Stamp Act was an internal tax placed on property, goods and services in the colonies. The Act was made to raise revenue. It taxed anyone who had a will, bought or sold property, purchased any kind of newspaper or borrowed money (Text P. 87).

As the number of slaves increased, so did the worry of a slave revolt. The slave owners came up with a powerful and intricate system of control, which helped them to maintain their way of life. The system was to help keep power and wealth where they were. There system was one that was psychological and physical for the slaves. They were taught things such as discipline, their inferiority to whites and their masters (Zinn P. 29).
