In The Time Of Butterflies

In the Time of the Butterflies is written by Julia Alvarez and takes place in the Dominican Republic during the mid 1900's. It talks about four sisters which grew up in a wealthy family; each sister having different views and ways about society and life. Trujillo is the president of the Dominican Republic and he uses both sexism and violence to try to control these sisters. He succeeds in disrupting these women only in some cases but he can never truly control them. They go through many hardships and sufferings because of Trujillo's plans to manage them but even after breaking down in tears, their spirit is still strong. .
Trujillo loves most young women because of what they can give him. If they"re pretty and young, he"ll do anything in his power to basically rape her. The first incident that happened between the sisters and Trujillo was during one of his parties. Trujillo had asked Papa and his daughters, especially Minerva, to come to his party. Minerva was the right age for Trujillo's taste so she was expected to come. She was offered to sit at Trujillo's table and not to be rude, accepted his invitation. Surprisingly she didn't have to sit next to Trujillo but instead across from him. The senator's wife was a young blond haired woman and she sat next to him. When Minerva dropped something below the table, she realized it was a blessing that she didn't have to sit next to Trujillo. He was rubbing the inside thigh of the blond woman's leg and he probably also drugged her. A few moments later they were dancing and next thing you know Trujillo took her inside. When Minerva's turn came to dance with Trujillo she hesitated but was basically forced to. Trujillo was trying to turn her on with his charm but it wasn't working. She explained that she wanted to go to college but Trujillo said that there was no place in college for girls like her. Trujillo pulled her close to him but Minerva refused and pushed away.
