French Space Program
The French Space Program is more often referred to as the CNES. CNES stands for Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (National Space Research Centre). This program was started back in 1961 by the French government in hopes to propel the French and their scientific community to the helm of outer space research. The CNES works closely with other space programs held by other nations, such as the United States, Russia, Japan and the ESA, or European Space Agency. Along with these nations, many past joint ventures have been accomplished, as well as many future ventures to come. The CNES’s main role in the space program is to very carefully analyze both the technical and economical angles of any and all proposed space projects presented to them by the government. In other words, it is their duty to decide whether the proposed project is even capable of being accomplished with the current technology on hand, and then also decide the estimated cost of this project and if it is worth investing X amount of millions of dollars. Once this overall breakdown of a project has occurred, if the proposal is approved, the CNES then oversees the development stages all the way through the operational stages of the project. The CNES also t
The biggest feature that the CNES has to offer many space programs, not just including the ESA, is the development and construction of The Guiana Space Centre (CSG). This very elaborate addition to the French space program is located at Kourou on the French Guiana. It is located near the ocean, with nearly 100 miles of coastline at its disposal. The main benefit that this site offers is its relative closeness to the Equator, which is needed for any type geostationary orbit. Geostationary is important because it allows satellites to travel above the earths equator at a matching speed of the earth’s rotation, which allows the satellite to remain stationary in relation to the earth. Also another important benefit, for reasons unknown to myself, the closer the launch site is to the equator, the less amount of money it will cost to launch. There are many ideas and proposals that the French space program is embarking upon, with the assistance and partnership of the ESA. Some of this research includes further researching earth and its atmosphere through the use of space balloons and space transport and explorations so such places as Mars, Venus and neighboring asteroids. But one of the most currently important, for both now and the future, is the development of space positioning and navigation. As many know, telecommunications is at the forefront of all technological research, and this will be the most dominating of all space sectors. There already have been a number of telecommunication satellites that have been launched in the past, such as the Telecom-1 s
