A Parent’s Primary Responsibil
A parent’s primary responsibility is their children and the children’s well-being. Adam was not a very responsible man throughout the whole novel. Adam, a primary character is portrayed as an antagonist in the novel “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck. He did not name his children until they were over a year old, and according to Samuel the children weren’t named very well. Adam did not get to know the twins until they were over 10 years old. First of all, when the kids were born they were not named right away. Lee had to inform Samuel of the nameless children. It wasn’t until Samuel Hamilton went to Adam’s house that the twins were named. Adam had no idea what to name them. He said “this naming is no simple business” (Steinbeck, 265). Samuel agreed and then suggested choosing names from the bible which Samuel had brought as a reference. Samuel gave suggestions to Adam. Samuel threw some names out to consider like Caleb and Joshua, but Joshua didn’t appeal to him because Joshua was a soldier. Although “Caleb was a captain” (Steinbeck, 272) Adam liked the name. “I kind of like Caleb—Caleb Trask” (Steinbeck, 2
Even after naming the children, Adam never really got to know his children until they were about 10 years old. Lee took care of the children until Adam took some responsibility, so “he talked to them in Cantonese, and Chinese words were the first they recognized and tried to repeat” (Steinbeck, 252). He completely ignored them, and was oblivious to the existence to them until he was forced to name them. That Samuel day when he finally looked at them he said, “Why, these boys are not alike! They don’t look alike” (Steinbeck, 263). “The twins protested when” (Steinbeck, 265) Adam set them down. “Lee spoke to them sharply in Cantonese and they were silent” (Steinbeck, 264). This proves that Adam didn’t do anything with his children, because they didn’t understand English, but they listened to Lee when he spoke to them in Cantonese. Adam thought that his neglect was okay because “their mother left them motherless,” (Steinbeck, 259) so what did it matter if he wasn’t in the picture. Samuel was trying to show Adam that he was wrong in not paying attention to his children by retorting back “And you have left them fatherless” (Steinbeck, 259). Finally when Adam realizes that Cathy isn’t who he thought she was, Adam started to take interest in his responsibility, Aron and Cal. Adam paid attention to the twins, and “Cal and Aron were first astonished and then a little embarrassed to find that
