Lady Macbeth: Tragic Heroine

In the eyes of Aristotle and many others, tragic heroism is made up of several small but

important features. A tragic hero or heroine has to have at least one tragic flaw in his or her

character, starting out usually in a high social class. The character must be suffering from some

type of moral disorder and the audience must feel pathos (pity) for him or her.

In the Shakespearian play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth showed some of these features and

others thus opening the door to controversy such that she could be in fact a tragic heroine. I

believe that she was a tragic heroine in this play because of these reasons and facts.

First of all, she definitely had a tragic flaw (hamartia). The deadly combination of her

greed for power and status and her distraught moral confusion literally killed her. In act I/scene V,

line 40, Lady Macbeth sacrificed her womanly qualities and her better self to fulfill her husbands

so called destiny so that she will be queen. Furthermore, here moral disorder was displayed when

she killed herself because of her unbalanced feelings. Lady Macbeths sleepwalking scene in act

V/scene showed how all of the events hit her.
