Essay
In 1973 a landmark decision was made in our society. The Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade changed the way our society copes with unplanned and unwanted pregnancies. In the Roe v. Wade decision, the Court held that a woman's right to an induced abortion (any of various procedures that result in the termination and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus from it’s mothers womb) fell within the right to privacy, protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision gave a woman a right to abortion during the entirety of the pregnancy and defined different levels of state interest for regulating abortion in the second and third trimesters (Roe v. Wade Org.). Supporters of this decision known as “Pro Choice” argue that the unborn child is not alive until birth, therefore, it is a woman’s choice whether or not she desires to continue the pregnancy to term resulting in live birth or not. The opposite side of this debate is that of the “Pro Life” advocates. They believe that the Pro Choice supporters of this law have used false beliefs and innuendo to promote their cause, often knowingly. Pro Life Advocates believe that the Roe v. Wade decision effectively made the killing of innocent children completely legal in the Unit
The question of when life begins has been scientifically proven for many years. Unfortunately today, it is still a question of great debate in America. Factual arguments go unheard by the majority (or at least the lawmakers) as lobbyists nationwide successfully peddle their lies and misinformation. The Pro Choice propaganda has been so successful that most Americans live out their lives without giving thought to the millions of babies who die everyday; or to the surviving parents and families who are left emotionally (and sometimes physically) scarred. In coming to an understanding of exactly what the ramifications of the Roe v. Wade decision have been, it is helpful to look at the statistics involved. Between the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 and through 1996, induced abortion was responsible for the deaths of over 40 million infants in America alone. Currently there are approximately 46 million abortions per year worldwide. What this means in layman’s terms is that on average 126,000 babies die each day due to abortion. (Abortion TV) While these numbers are staggering they seem abstract and unreal unless given something significant to compare them to. It is for this reason that the fight for the pre-born child is often referred to as a war. Upon resigning from his lucrative position he wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine that he was deeply troubled by his “increasing certainty that I had in fact presided over 60,000 deaths.” In his film ‘The Silent Scream’ Nathanson later stated, “Modern technologies have convinced us that beyond question the unborn child is simply another human being, another member of the human community, indistinguishable in every way from any of us.” (qtd. In Alcorn, 42) In the quest to discover exactly when life begins, there are many sources to choose from. One only needs to take a college course on child development to become educated of the fact that the life of a child begins at the moment of conception. University level courses in child development begin with the study of genetics, prenatal development and eventual birth. In these courses students look deeper into the questions of life’s beginnings. Through textbooks such as Dr. Bradley M. Patten’s, Human Embryology, we learn, “It is the penetration of the ovum by a spermatozoan and the resultant mingling of the nuclear material each brings to the union that constitutes the culmination of the process of fertilization and marks the initiation of the life of a new individual.” (qtd. In Alcorn, 40) Dr. Patten is not alone however. Another authority on human life and the issues of abortion is Dr. Bernard N. Nathanson M.D. War is another tragedy of this world. It is one that there have been great debates over, large protests against and huge losses of life in the process of. By looking at the death rates of wars, we can begin to get a better understanding for the loss of life that induced abortions are responsible for. During World War I there were 116,516 deaths; World War II resulted in 545,108 deaths and the Civil War resulted in 498,332 deaths. The combined total for these three wars equals just over 1 million lives lost (1,159,956). In the past year there have been over thirty-nine times more deaths due to induced abortion than there were in these three wars combined. (qtd in Ankerberg, N. pag
