Wilhelm keitel

Along with many other officers Wilhelm Keitel was one of Adolf Hitler’s Henchmen. Keitel was an officer easily molded and influenced by Hitler to do what ever he said. This was not uncommon within Hitler’s circle of senior officers. Nevertheless each officer had a long career of service under Hitler and Nazi Germany, and each were found guilty of crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg trials.

Wilhelm Keitel was born on the 22nd of September 1882 in the Hanover farmlands. His father was a landowner and mother was a housewife. He joined the army in 1902, at the age of 19, and by the time he turned 20 he was promoted to second lieutenant. Throughout his militaristic career one sees a consistent rise in ranks. Keitel was then promoted to captain as soon as The Great war began. Keitel suffered many injuries during the war like many. One of which caused permanent damage, which was a shell splinter wound. This injury postponed any further action for the next 7 months and when he recovered he was appointed to the General Staff. When the war was over Keitel served Germany as a member of the Freicorps, in which his nationalistic ideals grew stronger and stronger. After spending three years as a member of the Freicorps, Keitel then

took a job for the next 3 years at the School of Cavalry in his hometown of Hanover. Keitel next served the 6th artillery regiment from 1923-1929, and soon after was promoted to lieutenant colonel in February of that year. Keitel became more of an influential figure as time passed and soon served as Organizations Department Head. This led to his involvement in plans to secretly increase Germany’s military by up to four times the size.

Many historians labeled Wilhelm Keitel a variety of things. Samuel W. Mitcham, Hitler’s Field Marshals labeled Keitel as Hitler’s finger puppet. Mitcham records a conversation between Werner von Blomberg and Hitler, in which Hitler is looking for a replacement Minister of War. “Hitler asked Blomberg whom he thought would be suitable for the job, Blomberg did not know. Hitler then asked who was in charge of Blomberg’s staff; Blomberg named Keitel but added that he was nothing but the man who runs his office. Hitler then state that that was exactly whom he was looking for.” This showed that Hitler was merely looking for someone who would carry out orders no questions asked. Thus, he was looking for his own finger puppet.

Wilhelm Keitel seemed to be a hardworking German military man who was heavily influenced
