As most work consisted of moving objects, the artist had to capture it. Photography, which was becoming increasingly popular was used by many artists, including Degas. He took photographs of models for his Ballet paintings, posing in such ways that would be impossible to hold for long periods of time. But as photography was a new practise they found that the long exposure time of photographs taken outside, meant that often images caught in motion would be blurred.

You often see impressionist pictures consisting of water. This is because a lot of artists were fascinated by it. The light bounced off the water and with the ripple effects the image became unfocused and sketchy.

My favourite part of the painting is the way the ballerinas stand and the poses they hold. It is very elegant looking as they are able to move in soft, gliding ways.

He used oil paints to create the mood and atmosphere in his paintings. Its thick which has provided a very dark mood in this picture. The lily pads are the main feature with dark blue and purple vertical lines of water. The reflection of the willow branches, overhang the main grouping of water lilies.

The aesthetics of this painting is very pleasing but even through I like the painting I would not buy it to hang on my wall.

Monet has used many dark colours in it.

Degas was different from all other Impressionists because he would not paint outside. He would use pastels and sketch the scene first. Photography was just being introduced into the world and he was keen to experiment with it. When a picture was taken it took many seconds before the picture was actually printed, and sometimes found people walking in and out of the frame.
