anti Euthanasia

Pain has always been the main reason that the terminally ill even contemplate an early death. With the elimination of virtually all pain and incredible strides in the art of pain management there is no need for legalized euthanasia or assisted suicide. Research shows that 99% of patient’s pain can be effectively relieved with the help of medication. Most of this can be done by simple treatments, more than half of which do not include even moderate side effects. In the past, doctors were afraid to give certain types of medication, such as narcotics, to patients. They did not have a clear understanding of pain control and the physical needs of patients. Recently, much more emphasis has been placed upon the education of proper medicinal use. There are now specific portions of hospitals dedicated solely to the relief of pain. We have realized that this is an imperative part of appropriate care, and those who may have needlessly suffered just a few years ago are now getting the kind of treatment they need. The number of patients receiving the correct dosages and type of medication steadily continues to rise. We must focus on removing the problems themselves, rather than the people having these problems.

Women are also more likely to take part in assisted suicide or euthanasia. Of those who died with the assistance of Dr Jack Kevorkian between 1990 and 1998, 71% of the victims were women. Professor Silvia Canetto, of Colorado State University who has published extensively in the area of gender and suicide, recently stated that “the taking of one’s own life tends to be seen as a masculine act, thus mercy killing appears as a more permissible way for women to commit suicide.” Canetto also warns that policies, claiming to enhance autonomy, dignity and choice, may victimize more women.

Some terminally ill people do not have the capacity to make reasonable decisions, especially when dealing with something as irreversible as death. Their mental state may not be stable due to depression, the illness itself, or outside pressure. They may feel as though they are being a burden to their families, friends, doctors and nurses and that the best choice would be to end their life. Many terminally ill patients spend the end of their lives very alone, and are rarely visited by family or staff; this loneliness makes them feel unwanted, and could make them feel as though dying was an obligation. If more soothing mental, physical, and spiritual treatment, known as palliative care, was available then the terminally ill would have better end of life quality. This would eliminate their desire to die prematurely.

The inconsistencies of euthanasia and assisted suicide are overwhelming. There would be absolutely no way to regulate such laws, because each individualized case is so unique. If each person is to be examined
