Donatello

Donatello was one of the greatest Italian sculptors of the Renaissance time. He was born in 1386 and died at the age of 80 in 1466. Donatello’s full name is Donato Di Niccolo Bardi, but is infamous for his one word name. He was mostly a sculptor, building such art as the "St. George Killing the Dragon” and the life size statue of St. Louis, using materials including wood, marble, and bronze.

Born in Florence, Italy, Donatello was not a cultural intellect, but instead a realist, who studied Roman ruins and also became a humanist. He first started exploring the world of art around the age of 20 and primarily studied it, for he did not marry or have any kids through out his lifetime.

Although not of higher knowledge, Donatello had a more detailed range of knowing of ancient sculpture that any other artist of his time. The inscriptions and signatures on his works are some of the earliest examples of classical Roman lettering.

Sometime between the years of 1404 and 1407, Donatello became a member of the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti who was a sculptor in bronze. The infamous artwork “David” is one of Donatello’s best. Originally made for the Cathedral, it was moved in 1416 to the Palazzo Vecchio, a city hall, whe
