Baseball and its Effect on Soc

The first organized baseball club was formed in 1842 by a group of young men in New York City; this group was led by Alexander Cartwright. They called their club The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. The Knickerbockers developed a set of twenty rules, first published in 1845, that became the foundation of modern baseball. The knickerbocker rules called for nine player teams and defined a playing field with a home plate and three additional bases set apart a specific distance. There was also a lot of different myths on how the game of baseball came to be.

Abner Graves, who was a Colorado mining engineer in his late eighties, claimed to be an old friend of Abner Doubleday. Graves claimed that he saw Doubleday split the men into two teams of eleven on each side and had a set of four bases. Graves was convinced that he was witnessing the invention of the game baseball. Graves also described the idea of “Soaking” runners or throwing the ball at the runner to get an out. The game of town ball was played seventy-five years before Abner Doubleday’s game in 1839. In 1907 they accepted Graves’ story and made Abner Doubleday the inventor of the game baseball. Not only did Abner Doubleday never play baseball, he never mad any reference to the game in any of his speeches, writings or his journals. Ironically before Doubleday died, he claimed to have never invented the game of baseball, as
