George Washington was the very first president of the U.S. He was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He was one of 10 children in an aristocrat family. They grew tobacco and prepared lumber. He received his education at a churchyard school and then attended boarding school about 30 miles away from home. He liked learning about the practical world, but did not do well in languages or reading. When he was 16 he became a surveyor. While doing this he earned money to buy his own land. By the time he was 21 he owned more than 1,500 acres of land. The death of his brother Lawrence in 1752 meant that he had to take care of his estate and take over his office as general the colony.
