Presidents


            The presidents have played a great role on our country. They have got us through many tough situations. We have studied some of the presidents throughout school, but I decided to study them some more to refresh my memory. I chose 6 presidents to research. The research includes their background and presidential accomplishments. These presidents are: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Herbert Hoover. These presidents have contributed to our society in many ways.
             George Washington was the very first president of the U.S. He was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia. He was one of 10 children in an aristocrat family. They grew tobacco and prepared lumber. He received his education at a churchyard school and then attended boarding school about 30 miles away from home. He liked learning about the practical world, but did not do well in languages or reading. When he was 16 he became a surveyor. While doing this he earned money to buy his own land. By the time he was 21 he owned more than 1,500 acres of land. The death of his brother Lawrence in 1752 meant that he had to take care of his estate and take over his office as general the colony. A year after that he became a colonel in the French and Indian War. By the late 1700s knew of his great military skills. In 1775 he was appointed military advisor for New York. Not long after that he was appointed Commander in Chief of the entire military. He lost his first battle, but was very successful in New Jersey. In 1871 he forced the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. The war was won. Washington was elected president in 1789 and served two terms. He managed the problems of a nation the debt of.

             Thomas Jefferson was the third president. He was born April 13, 1743 in Virginia. His dad was a successful surveyor and his mother was from an upper class family.
