Annie Henderson's Stength

Today we have to deal with so many bio-terrorist scares and celebrity break ups, that we can hardly remember a much simpler time. In the words of Avril Lavigne, "Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?" In many ways our years of hardship and intense labor for racial equality has brought fourth a substancial amount of complexities. Although it was one of man's most remarkable leaps forward, it's important to remember that many people lived and died within the unmistakable boundaries of race; these people were staples of our time. In "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," by Maya Angelou, Annie Henderson truly displayed her strengths in a time where we could not seem to see beyond the black and white. She said, "I'm gonna work so fast today, i'm gonna make you look like you standing still." Her hard labor and circulation of the store's goods was the glue holding the town together. Once established in this high position, people knew that they could come to Annie for any kind of help. Occasionally, this meant hiding some of the locals when under suspicion by the ruthless Klu Klux Klan. "...after he heard that he was being sought he took refuge in Mr's Henederson's store." Her power and prersoverancekept those under her wing safe. She also held high a sense of class to try to give the store and herself a dignified quota. "Sister Flowers, I'll send Bailey up to your house with these things." If it werent for her carefully planned tactic of making people feel at home, the store wouldn't have been such a huge sucess.
