Al Qaeda
Terrorism is defined as “…simply the contemporary name given to, and the modern permutation of, warfare deliberately waged against civilians with the purpose of destroying their will to support either leaders or policies that the agents of such violence find objectionable”(Carr 6). One of the biggest known Terrorist groups today is Al Qaeda, founded by Osama Bin Laden. This global terrorist group has been terrorizing various parts of the world since 1988, their first headquartered base in Afghanistan. There hate for the US is justified by Osama’s words of their religious jihad. “…Al Qaeda believes themselves to be defenders of the ‘nation’ or ‘kingdom’ of Islam generally, and they certainly consider that kingdom to be at war with the United States.”(Carr 228). They believe that god wants everyone who does not follow their religious theories to die. By killing them, they are guaranteed into heaven. Osama lost his father when he was 13. He married at the age of 17 to a Syrian girl who was a relative. He grew up as religiously committed boy and the early marriage was another factor of protecting him from corruption. Osama completed his education at the university in Jeddah. He had a degree in pu
Jacquard, Roland. In the Name of Osama Bin Laden. Durham and London: Duke UP, 2002 Al- Qaeda believes that governments of Muslim countries that fail to follow Islamic law should be overthrown. Al- Qaeda also considers the United States to be a primary enemy of Islam. It opposed the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, the country where the holiest Muslim sites are. Thousands of U.S. troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia from 1991 to 2003. In 1996, bin Laden called upon Muslims to topple the Saudi government and liberate Islamic holy sites from foreign influence. Two years later, he also said it was the duty of Muslims to kill U.S. citizens, both civilian and military, and their allies. He spent much of the 1980's raising funds to help the mujahideen. In the late 1980's, Bin Laden founded al- Qaeda to resist the Soviets. In addition to many exchanges of fire and small operations, the first major battle he had face to face with the Soviet army with pure Arab personnel was the battle of Jaji in the province of Baktia 200 kilometers away from Khost.During the 1990's, al- Qaeda expanded its goals. It opposed foreign influence in Muslim countries and called for the overthrow of Muslim governments allied to the United States. Al- Qaeda is believed to support other Islamic extremist groups throughout the world. (Gunaratna 77-81) Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization that supports the activities of Muslim extremists around the world. Al-Qaeda is an Arabic term that means the base. The United States government has blamed al- Qaeda for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C. Al- Qaeda also is believed to have aided other attacks against U.S. targets, including the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.( Gunaratna) Americans feel that they are doing what is necessary to keep themselves safe. If it offends people, or makes people feel like their rights are violated, they back it up with the fact that they are in the middle of a war on terrorism and it is time where National Security plays more of a role that human rights. They feel if you are patriotic and want to remain “united we stand” that losing the flexibility of some rights garenteed by the constituion should not be a factor. Educated people understand that the bill of rights, like freedom of speech, press, are not absolute, especially in times of war. In Conclusion of this struggle between to major forces. It doesn’t matter on what you believe, but to believe the fact that these to forces cannot exist together peacefully. America wants to avenge the Sept 11th tragedy and make them pay. In order for the Americans to feel justice they need Bin Laden destroyed, and that will only create another conflict between his followers. From this point of view you can foresee, years of struggle for ultimate power, and a never ending war between to totally different groups of people.
