Atlantic Ocean Currents
According to Flam, August 9 2003, pg. 7, “The simple definition of a current is part of a fluid body moving continuously in a certain direction.” But the question is if this is true abut ocean currents what is the difference between the thousands of ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream, the Alaskan current (Whipple, 1983) and the California current? (Lea, July, 2002) The answer, the direction the air is blowing over that certain area and the movement of the earth. (Heidorn, 1999) In this report we are going to explore five of the Atlantic Ocean Currents. The Angola Current is a water flow along southwest Africa. It used to be named the South Current because it flowed southward. Ten years after being named this they changed it to the Angola Current because it flows along the coast of Angola for a long distance and is strongest there. By changing it to the Angola Current it describes where is it located, not just what direction it flows. The Angola Current forms the eastern part of a cyclonic gyre. In the upper layer it seems to be formed mostly by the southeast part of the South Equatorial Countercurrent and the southern waters from the north of the Benguela Current. On the other hand, in the laye
The Canary Current flows along the African coast north to south. It is wide and slow like most eastern boundary currents. It flows year round towards the equator. The surface waters are cool because as it travels south it entrains water from the coast. On average, the current is about 500 m deep and flows at a low speed. The Canary Island Archipelago is deeper than 3000 m. This is an obstacle to the movement of the Canary Current. The Canary Current system contains coastal upwelling witch is when cold waters from below rise to the surface, and eddies witch is water moving contrary to the direction of the main current. The eddies have a length scale of 100 to 300 km.
