Hamlet

In William Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet,” tow of the main characters father’s are viciously murdered. The first father to be murdered is King Hamlet, who’s son Prince Hamlet is supposed to avenge the death of his father. Also in the play Laertes father, Polonius, was stabbed to death, like Hamlet, it is Laertes job to see that the man who murdered his father shall have the same done to him. Although both son’s seek revenge on their father’s murderer’s they go about it in two different but still effective ways.

Hamlet’s dilemma begins when the watchmen , Marcellus, Bernardo, and his good friend Horatio inform him that they have seen the ghost of his dead father. So Hamlet is startled and wants to see this for himself. So one night Hamlet goes with the watchmen and sure enough the ghost of Hamlet’s father again appears to them. The ghost explains to him exactly how he died. He reveals to his son that his own brother, Claudius, is responsible for his death, and now Hamlet must kill his uncle to avenge his father’s death. Claudius is also now not only his uncle but has now married his mother, Gertrude, and has also took over his father’s throne as king of Denmark. Hamlet agrees with his

Now unlike Hamlet’s passive way of avenging his father’s death, Laertes has more of an aggressive approach. His father was brutally murdered by Hamlet while he was talking to his mother in her room after the play. Hamlet heard something from behind the curtain and having so much rage built up inside him brutally starts stabbing Polonius, who he thinks at the time is Claudius, in hopes of avenging his father’s death, to death. Then when Laertes hears the news about his father’s death he is furious. He comes quickly to find out who killed his father assuming it was King Claudius unlike Hamlet. But the king explains to Laertes that it was not him who killed his father but it was the young Prince Hamlet. Then King Claudius sets up a plan with Laertes to kill Hamlet so he can avenge his father’s death and at the same time Claudius can save his own. He has Laertes sword fight with Hamlet but on Laertes sword is poison that if injected into the body will cause immediate death. The two men then begin to sword fight. Hamlet is winning the battle between the two when all of a sudden the frustrated Laertes stabs Hamlet with the poisoned sword. But somehow Hamlet manages to take the sword from Laertes and stab Laertes also with the poisoned sword.

Although Laertes will die, he like Hamlet, accomplish his goal in avenging the death of his father, although neither one of them will now live to see their
