pursuasive argument

Webster's dictionary describes "persuade"-as to move by argument, entreaty, or expostulation to a belief, position, or course of action. As I see it, a person with beliefs which can be changed by a single person must have the brain capacity of a monkey. If their views are changed so easily, they obviously lack strong conviction in their beliefs anyway. Now I know that there are people who specialize in changing beliefs, conviction and ideas with only a few words, but I would not allow my own views to be changed unless it was something that I knew nothing about in the beginning and, consequently, held no strong opinions about.

During this assignment one thing became very clear to me- I lack concern for many things that plague our world. I don't seem to have many views on big issues in the world. The few things that I do seem to care about are things that most people just don't care about. I found my self writing on several topics and not caring about the issues on which I was writing. With all due respect, teachers, if you feel compelled to correct persuasive essays, I have a solution for you. Pick up the paper, read the editorials, correct any spelling errors, then send the editorials back to the people who wrote them, and suggest that they correct them so that they can get a good grade.

Maybe you have some problem with you parents and how they have raised you. Well this make the most sense; let’s complain to an English teacher who could careless that your parents waited till you were eighteen to tell you that Santa Clause was not real. This subject interests no one except maybe you.

So my final statement in this paper will be that persuasive assignments are pointless assignments for students; they do not help any student in the long run and just the student does not get to fully express their opinions on many subjects. Persuasive arguments for the purpose of just writing a persuasive argument are the biggest waste of time to me. I hope that you have read this with an open mind. But, if not I hope you at least found some humor in it!!

It seems to me that writing persuasive essays is a useless waste of time. If as a student you feel compelled to write about something you feel strongly about, by all means do so. Write to your local paper, to your parents, to the Governor, to the President, to the Pope, or even to Reverend Jesse Jackson. Write if you think it is going to make a difference (odds are it will not), but do not write just for the sake of writing!
