Another style Morrison frequently uses is having the characters retell stories to each other in fragments. This is because the characters find it very painful to tell their whole stories, as it reminds them of how they suffered. They also do not want to burden the other characters with their stories as they know they already musty have enough painful memories of their own. I enjoy the different ways in which Morrison uses style and structure as they make the novel much more interesting and enjoyable to read, taking it to higher levels and adding more dimensions to it. Without these styles and symbols that make the reader think harder and become more involved in the novel, it may have turned out to be flatter and have a smaller impact on the reader, not making us realise how painful the times of slavery must have been.

Colour is also of major importance to the novel. Red light shines around the inside of Sethe’s house near the front door and symbolises the blood lost when she murdered Beloved, and the violent, angry presence of the baby’s spirit. Two orange square patches provide the only colour in the room Beloved sleeps in, significant because it is very fiery and warm, and also because the patches came from clothes that Sethe had made for Beloved when she was a baby. Beloved has come to 124 in order to cause trouble, and the orange patches could also symbolise the patch of damage, excitement and upset she wishes to inflict in an otherwise normal, bland atmosphere. Beloved also very much seeks sweet things, ironic as she is anything but sweet herself.

The use of multi-perspectives in the novel allows us to see how different characters interpret people or events around them.
