Obesity
This project is about obesity, which is one of the most underrated health problems in America. Over 97 million people or 55% of the population are either overweight or are obese (Oberrieder, 2001). In the 1980’s, only 1 in 4 people or 25% of the population was overweight (Fight Against Flab, 1997). The issues involved include the prevalence in American society, how it is defined and what tools are used to calculate it, location of fat on the body, causes of obesity, health risks involved, medications, surgeries, and fad diets. From my training and curriculum in the health fitness field, I feel that this problem is one that should be given more attention by our government. Obesity is a disease, like cancer, and should be given full monetary research support. When over half of the population suffers from this ailment, it should be considered a priority for health officials. Our society in general is only furthering the epidemic. Too many Americans are sitting in front of the computer or TV and getting no form of exercise.
