Analysis of Rose Madder, by St

In the beginning of Rose Madder, by Stephen King, the prologue introduces the two main characters Rose Daniels and her husband Norman. The introduction shows Norman as an abusive psychotic man. When he is introduced, he is beating Rose and causes her to miscarry. Thirteen years later as Rose is making the bed while Norman is at work, she sees a spot of blood on the sheet from where he hit her in the face the night before. She was so tired and yet, she knew that if she didn’t change the sheets she would get beat again. After thinking about it for a while, she decides that she’s had enough and she takes her husband’s credit card off of the mantle and leaves.

After Rose has gotten settled in her own apartment, and has a good job, Norman finds her. Norman is a police detective. He has literally gone crazy trying to find her and get her alone, so he can “talk to her up close.” While Norman is searching for her, Rose buys a picture that “empowers” her. The emotion that comes across in Angel Fire East, is the awesome power that goodness can create in people. There is plenty of suspense and action intermingled with scenes full of Love, Hate, and Despair. This book is an honorable example of Fantasy Fiction.

In Angel Fire East, the figurative language used contains personification, imagery, metaphors, and symbols. Personification is used to describe Nest’s forest friend Pick; “Nest looked at Pick and decided that he was a grumpy, walking stick figure with a moss beard.”(P.17) Imagery was used to describe the events leading up to the formation of the Gypsy Morph before John Ross captures it, “…the brightening grew more intense, a kind of wash in the air that slowly began to coalesce. Motes appeared, whirling through the shimmery haze…” (P.154) The author used a metaphor to describe the surroundings in Nest’s back yard in the winter, “The trees and bushes were a tangle o bare skeletal limbs...” (P.332) In the end of the book Nest realizes that the Gypsy Morph symbolizes all that she wants out of life, when it chooses her to be its mother by making the final transformation into a growing baby inside her body.

The theme for Rose Madder is that no matter what you do, good or bad, it always comes back to you in the end. This book is representative of its genre. This book is about real life fiction with some fantasy properties. It is also called contemporary fantasy. This book has no real historical significance.

After the woman kills Norman, Rose and her boyfriend are transported back into Rose’s apartment. A few months later, Rose and her boyfriend get married and they eventually have a daughter. However, Rose’s freedom did not come without a price; she is plagued by hideous dreams and visions of what will happen if she does not remember the pomegranate tree.
