Motivational Strategies in the Workplace

In this paper I will describe the management philosophy of SurgiVet, a division of Smiths Medical, and give a few examples of strategies that influence motivation with in the organization to support its philosophy. I will explain the benefits of motivational strategies. In addition, I will discuss how those strategies impact performance and how employee resistance presents itself as a reaction to those strategies. Finally, I will offer an opinion about how effective the organization’s management philosophy is in the area of employee motivation and give a rationale for my opinion.

Certain motivational strategies can work very well to get you excited about whatever work you need to do. The idea is to find ways to quickly and easily get you motivated to do things. Whether it's finishing off that project at work, or shoveling the driveway, we all could use a little help with self-motivation. Motivational strategies can help you in every area of your life. When you improve your motivation at work that often overflows into your motivation in your personal life. It also works the other way around. To be effective, motivational strategies must be incorporated into strategic goals and intertwined with the organizational business philosophy. This includes establishing processes to help managers develop lasting and meaningful motivational techniques. Training is important to ensure that managers have the skills to implement these techniques. To entrench motivational strategies in the organization, managers should be assessed on how well they develop and motivate staff.

Things like money and promotions can do a great job of demotivating people if they're handled poorly, but actually aren't that effective in motivating people. Threats aren't good motivators either. Often, in economic downturns, companies or managers say or imply to employees that they're lucky to have a job, so don't complain. That’s not a good way to motivate. I believe this makes employees reluctant to step up to the plate and to try new initiatives. Many of the mistakes that our general manager makes revolve around thinking that people are only driven by money. I have tried to show him there are other ways to compliment your employees, with out having to give them more money. These might include more training, travel, vacation, paid tuition, or a more flexible schedule. I was looking for more decision-making authority, more say in how I do my work, and more control of my own time and space flexibility. Those are the kind of things that not a lot of employers provide, but are very important to employees because they're trying to get better balance in their lives, and they want to feel like they are respected.
