Christians and life
Explain the beliefs Christians hold about their responsibility for those at the beginning and end their lives. The belief that Christians hold about human life is very strong and sacred. They believe that from the time that the ovum is fertilized a life is begun. So therefore having an abortion would be wrong as they are killing an innocent life, which cannot defend itself. Christians base their belief that abortion is wrong from evidence from some biblical references. For example in Psalm 139:16 the psalmist says concerning God, “Your eyes saw my unformed body” also in Job 10:8-10 we read, ”Your hands formed me and made me altogether. You have clothed me in flesh and have knit me together with bones and sinews. These passages teach us that God relates to the unborn in a personal manner, which would prohibit abortion from a Christian point of view. The bible to a Christian is a source of moral authority, from which we receive teachings and guidance on moral issues such as the sanctity of human life in cases such as abortion and euthanasia (assisted suicide). This is why Christians hold the view that life is sacred because God has written it in the bible and it refers to passages concerning abortion and euthanasia. Another
As well as abortion Christians also believe that euthanasia, assisted suicide when a person has become so ill that they cannot do it themselves is wrong. Although it is illegal in this Country, there are places that a person could go to abroad, where it is legal and be aided in suicide. This usually only happens in severe cases when a person cannot stand to live anymore, but Christians hold a responsibility for life and believe it wrong to do this in any case. Christians also look at the Popes teachings like the “Declaration on Procured Abortion”. This sums up that abortion is wrong and only God has the power to take life. It also tells us about the issues we face to day when abortion is bought up. E.g. “The problem of procured abortion and of its possible legal liberalization has become more or less everywhere the subject of impassioned discussions. These debates would be less grave were it not a question of human life, a primordial value, which must be protected and promoted”. Therefore in looking at suffering and impending death the Christian should see God’s sovereign hand and purpose, as well as the opportunity for ministering to the weak and vulnerable, with whom Christ himself is identified.
