O’Brien truly did dislike war itself and he expressed it in the book. An example of this is “It was an intellectual and physical standoff, and I did not have the energy to see it to a end. I did not want to be a soldier, not even an observer of war. But neither did I want to upset a peculiar balance between the order I knew, the people I knew, and my own private world”(O’Brien 89). He did not want to be a part of any war and not even a watcher of war he wanted no part of it. In war death was everywhere. O’Brien hated the fact that he went in to a war that he didn’t believe in and saw no point worth fighting in it. Death, bloodshed, and Vietnam itself altogether added to the O’Brien dislike of war. Vietnam was full of enemies and it was not a place that he wanted to be. Since soldiers were dieing everywhere and he knew he could be next. Death to him in that war was a waste of perfect life. I believe that his beliefs can only come from his experience there, which was very awful and could lead to lasting effect such as post war syndrome. War is terrible and awful all together, unless it is for a good cause. In this case O’Brien believed that this war was just the ultimate sacrifice of many individual in Vietnam. Soldiers were sent into a place of hell. As said by Gram, “If I die in a Combat Zone, a book by Tim O’Brien is a lurid, relaxed, razor sharp, and consciously dispassionate non fiction story about the wasteland of Vietnam the evils of the Vietcong”(Gram 443). Everything that O’Brien expressed came from first hand experiences. War was not a thing he liked he saw much bloodshed in Vietnam, friends dying, people he never knew dying, and knowing that those peoples’ loved ones were at home morning for them. He hated the fact that he was fighting in a war he should not be fighting in he tried to get out of it but felt like he was abandoning his country by doing it so he stayed in. This experience left him traumatized during war “ without fuss or rhetoric I registered the arbitrary deaths and futile suffering of soldiers and citizens” (O’Brien 96).
