franz kafka - the judgement
This story is about a young merchant by the name of Georg Bendemann and three very important relationships in his life. The first is his relationship with a childhood friend who had run off to Russia many years ago, with whom he still kept in touch by mail. The second is with his new fiancée. And the third and most important is with his father, with whom he runs a business and who lives with him. All three relationships are important to Georg and have major influences on his life. This story begins with very little action, as Georg is sitting in his room on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and reading over a letter he was about to mail to a childhood friend now living in Russia. Throughout the first part of the story he is thinking about this friend and feeling sorry for him as his business in St. Petersburg had failed and he really had nothing else to look forward to in life. Although it seems that Georg is devoted to this friend, he never writes about anything important, rather writing of meaningless gossip around the hometown. Once he enters the room the action increases and keeps increasing until the end of the story, and he is surprised at how dark and gloomy it is inside. He finds his father in a corner reading the newspaper and tells him the news. At first the father says that he cannot recall this friend in St. Petersburg and even asks Georg if he really has a friend there. Not much talking is going on at this point in the story and Georg puts his father to bed and covers him with a blanket. The father asks 3 times if he is well covered up, until Georg says, “Yes, you are well covered up.”, at which the father jumps out of bed and starts verbally attacking him. He accuses Georg of many acts of disrespect. He undermines everything Georg believes to be true in his life and Georg feels anxiety and despair and does not know how to respond. The father even insults his fiancée and writes her off as unimportant and worthless, and still Georg feels too weak to stand up to him. The father then admits that he does in fact know the friend in Russia and that he has been writing letters to him for years, telling him all of the things that Georg had failed to tell him. As he is telling Georg all these things, he grows more and more impatient and angry with him until finally he sentences him to “death by drowning”. Right after the words leave the father’s mouth, Georg runs from the room, across the street, to the bridge and just lets himself drop into the water. As he does, an almost endless line of tra
