Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart in 1962; the first store was opened in Rogers, Ark. Since 1962 Wal-Mart has grown to be the world’s largest retailer more than 3,200 facilities in the United States and over 1,100 in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Part of their success in America is that Wal-Mart prides itself by focusing on the fact that it is an "all American" company that offers low prices to their customers. By the close of the 1990's Wal-Mart had become the nations number one retailer, had its eleventh stock split , ventured into Puerto Rico , Germany and Korea, was the number one largest, private owned employer in the United States. The turn of the Century Wal-mart was listed by Fortune Magazine as the third most admired company of America, in 2001, it was among the top 25 Diversity Recruitment Programs for its aggressive program to hire and promote Latinos, according to Hispanic Business Magazine. In 2002, Wal-Mart is ranked number one on the Fortune 500 listing. Wal- Mart moved into Canada in 1995. They purchased 122 stores of the Woolco chain; all the stores they purchased were nonunion. In 1997, Wal Mart in Ontario was the first of the 2600 stores to become unionized. On April 14, 1996, United Steelworkers of America began an organization drive at Windsor store in Ontario. At first, it wasn’t successful, they have 205 votes that are against union, and 45 votes are in favour. However, the union filled out second application claimed the vote did not reflect the true wishes of the employees. On June 27th 2003, Manitoba had a successful campaign by Local 832 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada; it is the one of the country’s largest private sector unions with more than 230,000 members. 40% of store employees had sign up for the UFCW certification card to represent them. On December 21, 2003, Wal Mart in Quebec had chosen UFCW local 503 to represent them to improve their working conditions and to ensure a better future. “We are proud of the determination of the Wal- Mart workers in Jonquiere and are happy that they have chosen UFCW Local 503 to represent them,” says Marie-Josee Lemieux, president of UFCW Local 503. The Labour Relations Board had ordered Wal- Mart management to call meetings of all its employees in the Quesnel store and read aloud the summary of decision that found Wal Mart guilty of violating the labour Code. The board also told Wal Mart to use one hour of company time to address all employees about union and benefit of joining the union. The labour union in Canada is trying so hard to get Wal-Mart store in Canada to become unionized. They are trying to address employees about union and what kind of benefit they will get from joining.
