Athletes and drug testing
Wayne and Judy ACTON, guardians ad litem for James Acton, Plaintiffs, The reason I choose this case, was because recently in my stepbrother’s school, the school board has voted on random drug testing for athletes. This case was recently solved in the Supreme Court. The school district has been appeal the courts dissension, until March, 2002. The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the school board for drug testing athletes at random, during the playing season. Vernonia, Oregon, was a quit town. This is a small town with approximately 3000 persons living within the school district. Up until the mid-to-late 1980s there had been no problems in the schools. There was the occasional fight and discipline problems, but nothing major. In the late 1980s, teachers began to see a difference in their students. In 1992, James Acton, a seventh grader at the time, tried out for the football team. James made the team and took the papers home that his parents had to sign. After Wayne and Judy Acton reviewed the papers the were very upset. The Vernonia school district want a seventh grader to summit to drug testing. The Acton’s want action taken. Actions that are taken are things like a student can still play sports, but they have to go to drug counseling and have to take a drug test every week. If students and parents don’t agree to this student is suspended from sports for one whole season. an, a teacher in the district for 15 years was ready to quit his job. In May of 1992 the Acton’s case was heard in court. The Supreme Court ruled in the Acton’s favor. The school drug testing was dropped. This fight was not over yet. The school board appealed the courts ruling, up until 2002, when the court ruled in favor of the school. The courts ruling stated that the school may drug test athletes, only if they are suspected of using drugs. The
