On Tidy Endings
On Tidy Endings is a story that expresses true emotional and dramatic feelings about the death of a character in the story by the name of Collin. The story is told through the eyes of not one but two people who were in love with this deceased character at some point in their life. The names of these two main characters are Marion, who was Collin’s ex-wife of sixteen years, and Arthur who was Collin’s lover of three years. The focus of this paper is aimed at the individual whom I feel more sympathy for and that would be Arthur. I feel empathetic for Arthur simply because he was closer to Collin at the time of his passing and I can understand how it feels when you wake up to someone everyday and suddenly they are gone and your whole life changes. Physical characteristics about Arthur are not very many but from what we read, we can draw an image of him. He is a man roughly in his mid-thirties. Although he is dressed sloppily in his work clothes, he is still pleasant-looking. Also, he is slightly overweight. These combinations together tell me that he probably does not care about personal appearances at this point in his life or is still depressed. He has gained weight and looks sloppy. The statement that says he is
The emotional and personality characteristics of Arthur as told by him indicated to the reader that he was just sick of it all. He is exhausted by the whole funeral ordeal. Marion told him that he had received more condolence cards and his answer was, “more cards?” (Fierstein p. 1490) He perceives himself as independent. Marion helped him with the cards and he tells her that he didn’t need her to answer cards for him. He can do them himself. He was a character who liked acceptance. He was concerned about the fact that Jim probably had been blaming him for his father’s death. He is an up-front and straightforward kind of guy. He tells Marion that she should have been honest with Jim about his dad leaving her for him and pursuing an unusual relationship. Because of how Arthur was described in the beginning, we can tell that stress took a toll on him. While he was caring for Collin, he lost 23 pounds without dieting or exercise. As for the relationship between him and Marion, he wanted no sympathy from her. He snapped at her while she was trying to be supportive of him. It seems as if he felt that Marion was not sincere in what she said to him because he reminded her that Collin died in his arms and not hers. He is having difficulty getting through this new change in life. Overall, he wants Marion to place herself in his shoes and understand what he’s going through. Arthur remained static throughout the play. Although he and Marion had heated points in the story, the bottom line is that they started off as good friends and after all was said and done, they ended on good friendship terms. Once again, I supported Arthur because of how close he was to Collin and it is taking a toll on him. I can relate to losing a loved one causing my life to totally change. ple
