One must, at some point in his life, thought about why it is that the humans seemed to be the most advanced living thing on Earth. It is because the man was the only creature to have ever tried to understand the world, tried to create a relationship with God, tried to control his own destiny. It is this intellectual difference that has make man different from the rest of the world. Even the man’s very own technology: machines and clones do not possess this strange curiosity of man to attempt to delve deeper into the way of the universe. This is showed in many of our movies and TV shows of our time, often comparing mankind with technology. These includes the cartoon show Digimon, presented for younger generations, and movies like AI and Matrix, targeted for older viewers. They all distinguish the man from the machine, and attempt to show why mankind is so much more unique.
Digimon is a story that revolves around a group of kids who are transported into a “digital world” where the monsters and locations where all merely digital data, that could be destroyed or inherited by others. The big antagonist behind th
David then makes the journey to where he was created, and finds out truly, that he is nothing but a creation with no purpose, but for the pleasure of others. He is not unique; there are replicas of him. He belongs to a series of products, to be used by the humans only as replacement of real children. This again, tells us why mankind is unique: it has the fortune of possessing the power to have a purpose in his life and to strive to become a hero. The final scenario of the movies with the extinction of mankind and the arrival of aliens also proofs that the human is at length more complex than any machine, no matter how perfect and intricate it is. The aliens were able to use technology, and create his world and his home back for David, and even a hologram of the fairy so David could ask for his wish to be granted. But technology would not bring back David’s “mother” for him. First the aliens needed genetic material, representing the perplexity of the human body, and even with the hair, the clone could only survive one day, symbolizing how hard it is to replicate the motions and feelings of a true human being.
