JonBenet Ramsey

On Christmas day of 1996, John and Patricia Ramsey celebrated as they always did with lots of gifts for the children and visits to the homes of friends and family. They were having a great year; John Ramsey’s company Access Graphics reached its first one billion dollars in revenues, and Patricia Ramsey was recovering from ovarian cancer. Their children, Burke and JonBenet Ramsey, were happy and outgoing. In 1996, JonBenet had been a crowned the title of America’s “Tiny Little Miss” and the year before was “Little Miss Colorado.” Neighbors described JonBenet as a “young and elegant child” (Bellamy). That year would end sadly for the Ramseys with the death of their little girl.

The day after Christmas, the Ramsey family was to leave for vacation to their second home in Michigan. The next morning, instead of waking up to Mrs. Ramsey saying that breakfast was ready, Mr. Ramsey woke to this wife screaming that JonBenet had been kidnapped. Mrs. Ramsey told the police that she walked down the back stairs to the kitchen where she found a three-page ransom note. The note had been written by a “small foreign faction” that demanded $118,000 for the safe return of JonBenet. As soon as Mrs. Ramsey read the ransom note, she

On December 31, 1997, a funeral service was held for JonBenet at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, and she was buried in Marietta, Georgia. Her casket was covered with pink flowers, and a small white teddy bear sat next to it in the church. The family soon moved back to Atlanta where JonBenet was born. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey started the year off by doing an interview on CNN on January 1, 1997. Mrs. Ramsey told all viewers to “keep your children close to [you] at all times because a killer is on the loose” (Zaret). The Boulder police finished their ten-day search of the family home on January 4, 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey soon retained lawyers for themselves. Patrick Furman and Patrick Burke would represent Mrs. Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey would be represent by criminal attorney Bryan Morgan and Lee Foreman. In addition, the Ramseys have hired a publicist, a former FBI criminal profiler, two Denver private investigators and two handwriting analysts.

The police had a few other suspects besides the Ramseys. The Ramseys had given out many keys to their home over the years to individuals who were working on the house. They did not have a record of who all may have had a key. The police questioned the maid, neighbors and friends of the Ramseys who had a key. John Ramsey’s two adult children from another marriage were also suspects for a brief time but their “alibis checked out,” authorities said (Zaret).

While waiting for the call from the kidnappers, the Boulder County Police made several critical mistakes. First, they did not do a “proper search of the house, the area was not sealed off, and friends were allowed to walk in and out at their leisure” (Bellamy). Moreover, the officers ma
